Lawrence drops two to Lady Blues

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The Lawrence University softball team dropped both games of a Midwest Conference doubleheader to Illinois College on Sunday at Van Metre Field.
Illinois College won the first game 7-0 and took the nightcap 12-2 in five innings. The games were a makeup from a few weeks ago, and the teams met on a neutral field in Iowa since both were also playing in Iowa on Saturday.
In the opener, Sydney Hood limited Lawrence (3-29, 1-9 MWC) to three hits over seven innings. The Lady Blues (18-11, 11-2) supported Hood with a 15-hit attack against Xiomara Rueda-Marshall.
Illinois College jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and tacked on single runs in the fifth and seventh for the final margin.
In the second game, the score was tied 2-2 after two innings before the Lady Blues pulled away.
Illinois College led 2-0 after the first, but the Vikings tied it in the bottom of the second. Mattigan Haller reached on an error, and Rueda-Marshall blasted her third homer of the season to tie the game at 2-2. The Lady Blues countered with six runs in the third and added four more in the fifth to seal the victory.
Alissa Hodge allowed two hits over five innings, struck out six and didn't walk a batter to get the win. Lizzy Angemi took the loss for the Vikings.
Lawrence returns to action Wednesday when the Vikings host Beloit College.
