Vikings battle to 2-2 tie with Dubuque

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 nonconference tie with the University of Dubuque on Sunday on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
Lawrence grabbed an early 2-0 lead, but the Vikings were hampered in the second half by being a man down for the final 35 minutes of the match.
The Vikings scored the game's first goal in the 24th minute when Konstantinos Fardellas took a feed from Derek Morales. Fardellas beat Dubuque goalkeeper Matt Marchiori for a 1-0 advantage. Lawrence made it 2-0 just a few minutes later off a free kick. Zach Dale's free kick found Rodrigo Angulo, who blasted the ball past Marchiori.
Lawrence (0-1-1) held that edge until the 49th minute when Josh Krenger's header found the back of the net to trim the margin to 2-1.
In the 55th minute, Lawrence's Mark Todd received a red card after he got tangled up with a Dubuque player near midfield. The game featured five additional yellow cards, three on the Vikings and two on Dubuque.
The Vikings continued to hold the lead, thanks in large part to some fine saves by Lawrence goalkeeper Ethan Uribe. He finished with seven saves.
Dubuque (1-1-0) finally got the equalizer on a penalty kick with 6:56 remaining. There was a scramble in the box, and Uribe dived for the ball just as a Dubuque player jumped over him to get to the ball. Uribe clipped the Dubuque player's leg and a penalty kick was awarded.
Lucas Von Braun converted the penalty kick, and the game was tied 2-2.
Lawrence nearly got the game-winner when Fardellas' blast from just outside the top of the box skimmed past the crossbar in the final minutes.
