Vikings score in final seconds to force OT, drop shootout to Marian

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team got a dramatic goal in the final seconds Saturday to force a 4-4 overtime tie at the Appleton Ice Center, but Marian University pulled out a shootout win.
The 2-1 win in the shootout gave Marian possession of the Battle of Highway 41 trophy and two points in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings. The Vikings settled for one point in each of the two games this weekend.
Lawrence (2-13-2, 1-8-1 NCHA) trailed 4-2 after the Sabres (6-10-1, 3-6-1) scored 2:30 into the third period.
The Vikings climbed back into it after Marian's Nolan Kadachuk was sent out for roughing at the 8:38 mark. The Vikings cashed in on the ensuing power play when Hugh Anderson's shot from the point got past Colby Muise at the 9:42 mark.
Anderson's goal off a pass from Zach Lodes trimmed the Marian lead to 4-3, but the fireworks weren't done yet.
Still down a goal, Lawrence pulled goaltender Owen Carlson late but had to bring him back onto the ice after an icing call forced a faceoff in the Lawrence zone. The Vikings got control of the puck and Carlson began skating off as Zodes streaked up the ice.
The Vikings didn't need the extra skater because Lodes found Cory Checco with a pass, and Checco's wrist shot beat Muise with 7.9 seconds left to tie it at 4-4.
Marian had the better of the five-minute, 3-on-3 overtime, but Carlson made several outstanding saves to keep the game tied. Carlson finished with 38 saves, and Muise made 33 saves for Marian.
The game went to a three-player shootout, and Checco scored on the first attempt for Lawrence. The Sabres missed on their first attempt but scored on the next two to win it as Lawrence's second shot went wide and its third was saved.
The Vikings rallied three times in the game to tie it. Marian scored first in the opening period, but Checco scored at the 10:58 mark off passes from Robby Pustulka and Dante Terramani to tie it at 1-1.
The Sabres led 2-1 in the second when Lodes scored at the 14:34 mark with assists going to Ivan Galaguzov and Will Crull. Marian then scored the next two goals, but Lawrence scored twice in the final 10:18 to force the overtime.
