HANCOCK, Mich. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team shut down Finlandia University 3-0 Friday in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Houghton County Arena.
  Lawrence goaltender
Owen Carlson recorded his first career shutout with a 26-save performance. Three different players scored for the Vikings, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the opening period.
Lawrence (3-13-2, 2-8-1 NCHA) got on the board early courtesy of
Tyler Jensen. Jensen scored just 3:41 into the opening period with a goal off assists from
Jack Michels and
Oliver DeCroock.Â
The Vikings pushed the lead to 2-0 when
Jordan Cooper scored at the 15:21 mark of the first with assists from linemates
Ivan Galaguzov and
Zach Lodes.Â
The score stayed that way until midway through the third period. When Finlandia's Brendan Erickson was sent off for elbowing at 10:58, the Vikings cashed in on the ensuing power play.Â
 Â
Kyle Gierman scored on the power play at 11:48 with
Cory Checco and
Will Crull picking up assists to push the lead to 3-0.
Carlson preserved the shutout despite a pair of late penalties on the Vikings. Lawrence was whistled for two penalties with 1:38 left, and Finlandia pulled its goaltender to give the Lions a 6-on-3 advantage. The Lawrence penalty killers were up to the challenge and denied the Lions a goal in the final minute.
Finlandia (2-14-1, 1-10-0) went 0-for-5 on the power play, and Lawrence was 1-for-3.
Carlson finished with 10 saves in the final period after stopping seven shots in the first and nine more in the second. Finlandia goaltender Dakota Meyer made 31 saves.
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon.
