Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vikings edged in OT thriller at Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball forced overtime at Monmouth College on Monday with a long 3-pointer, but the Scots recovered to pull out a 75-72 Midwest Conference victory at Glennie Gymnasium.
Mallory Meyer scored 22 points and added four rebounds, three steals and two assists to lead Lawrence. Lydia Lueck scored a career-high 21 points, going 4-for-7 from beyond the 3-point line, for the Vikings.
Josie Eager came off the bench to score 16 points for the Vikings and added three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Emma Carlson pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds for the Vikings (6-8, 2-3 MWC).
Lawrence struggled with its shooting in the first half and trailed by as many as 12 with Monmouth holding a 25-15 lead heading into the second half.
The Vikings caught fire in the third quarter, going 7-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, to trim the lead to 41-35 heading to the fourth.
Eager nailed a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 48-45 with 5:55 left in regulation before the Scots pushed the lead back to seven at 57-50. Eager then made a pair of free throws, and Lueck buried a triple to trim the margin to 57-55 with 16 seconds left.
After Tarae Warner made one free throw with eight seconds remaining, Delaney Brooks was forced to attempt a 3-pointer from well past the top of the key. Brooks drained the 3-pointer from about 30 feet with less than two seconds left to tie the game at 58-58 and force overtime.
A three-point play from Lueck early in the OT gave Lawrence a 64-62 lead. The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes before Lueck was fouled with 39 seconds left. She made both free throws to give Lawrence a 70-68 lead.
Lily Harlan countered with a three-point for Monmouth (6-7, 2-2), and the Scots led 71-70. Meyer's layup with 30 seconds left gave Lawrence a 72-71 advantage, but Harlan hit a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to put Monmouth up 74-72.
Eager, who had three points in the overtime, drove to the basket and her underhand layup hung on the rim before slipping off and into the arms of Monmouth's Zoie Wall. Wall was fouled with less than a second left and made one free throw for the final margin.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Vikings travel to Grinnell College.
