APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team got a defensive stop in the final seconds Saturday and posted a 67-66 Midwest Conference victory over Monmouth College at Alexander Gymnasium.
The Vikings led by one when Monmouth grabbed a rebound and a chance to win it with a basket. Despite the Vikings playing some sticky defense, Monmouth got the ball into the hands of Kendall Brasfield, but his fadeway 16-footer barely hit the front iron. Lawrence's
Adnan Sarancic gobbled up the rebound and the buzzer sounded to seal the Vikings' victory.
Sarancic finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds and also picked up a pair of blocks. It was part of a balanced attack for the Vikings, who had four players in double figures.
 Â
Johnny Semany paced Lawrence (7-11, 4-5 MWC) with 15 points as he went 4-for-5 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the foul line.
Elliot Jung added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Lawrence, and
Nick Hesch came off the bench to score 11 points and grab seven rebounds.Â
 Â
Parker Prahl picked up nine points, seven rebounds and a game-high five assists for the Vikings.
Brasfield and Jordan Metcalf had 16 points apiece for Monmouth (10-8, 6-3).Â
Monmouth built a 27-19 lead late in the first half, but the Vikings rallied in the final five minutes before the break. Lawrence hit three free throws to pull within 27-22, and Semany then buried a 3-pointer to trim the margin to two.
Prahl's driving layup tied the game at 27-27 with 1:19 left in the first half before Monmouth made a free throw to take the lead back. Sarancic's layup off a beautiful feed from Prahl with four seconds left gave Lawrence a 29-28 lead at the half and completed a 10-1 run for the Vikings.
Lawrence quickly built a five-point lead in the second half, but Monmouth rallied to go up by eight at 58-50 with 8:43 left. The Vikings began clawing back with a pair of Semany free throws and two layups from Hesch.Â
After Monmouth hit a 3-pointer to go up 63-56, Semany answered with a triple of his own, and Jung converted a three-point play to cut the lead to 63-62. After a Monmouth miss, Prahl hit one free throw to tie it before Sarancic's layup put Lawrence back in front 65-63.
The teams traded misses before Semany's driving layup gave Lawrence a 67-63 advantage with 1:48 remaining. Monmouth got three free throws from Jordan Metcalf over the next minute to cut the lead to 67-66. That set up the final possession, and Lawrence came up with the defensive stand to secure the victory.
Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when the Vikings host Beloit College.
