Vikings edged by Monmouth in overtime

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team took another tough opponent to the wire on Saturday, but the Vikings were handed a 52-48 Midwest Conference overtime loss at Alexander Gymnasium.
Lawrence led by as many as six points in the fourth quarter, but Monmouth rallied to tie it and scored the final six points of the overtime to win it.
Emma Carlson turned in another stellar performance for the Vikings (6-12, 2-7 MWC) as she scored 14 points and pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds. The 20 rebounds in the sixth-highest game total in Lawrence history.
Delaney Brooks added nine points and four rebounds for the Vikings, and Lydia Lueck had eight points and four assists. Josie Eager chipped in with seven points and five rebounds for Lawrence.
Tarae Warner led Monmouth (9-9, 5-4) with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Lawrence used stifling defense in the first half to limit Monmouth to 21.7 shooting from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. The Scots hit just 5-of-23 shots in the first half.
The Vikings built a 16-8 lead on Lueck's layup with 6:11 left in the second quarter, and Monmouth managed to close to 20-17 at the half.
Lawrence pushed the lead up to 37-29 on Carlson's layup with 1:08 left in the third quarter, but Monmouth chipped away at the advantage. The Scots took the lead at 40-39 on a pair of free throws with 4:01 left in the contest.
Brooks answered with a 3-pointer to give Lawrence a 42-40 lead, but the Scots got a layup and free throw from Warner to take a 44-42 lead with 25 seconds remaining.
Lueck's driving layup with eight seconds left tied it at 44-44 and forced overtime.
Lawrence edged out to a 48-46 lead in the overtime before Ashley Jones' layup tied the game for the Scots. After a Vikings miss and turnovers by both teams, Zoie Wall hit a layup with 26 seconds left to give Monmouth a 50-48 lead.
The Vikings got the ball to Sophie Morey on the ensuing possession and she was fouled. She missed both free throws, and the Scots made two free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the win.
Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when the Vikings host Beloit College.
