Vikings shoot past Lake Forest in OT

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Three Lawrence University women's basketball players posted career scoring highs Saturday to lead the Vikings to an 89-81 overtime win over Lake Forest in a Midwest Conference game at the Sports and Recreation Center.
Delaney Brooks poured in 23 points, Mallory Meyer picked up 22 points and Libby Crandall fired in 20 points to all set career bests for the Vikings. Brooks and Meyer also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds apiece.
Brooks also hit a career-high five 3-pointers as she went 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. Crandall was 4-for-7 on 3-pointers as the Vikings shot 14-for-29 (48.3 percent) from beyond the arc. Brooks and Crandall were both 7-for-12 from the floor as the team shot 42.9 percent from the field.
Lawrence (7-13, 3-8 MWC) jumped out to an early advantage, but Lake Forest (5-13, 2-9) rallied and the score was tied 33-33 at the half. The game was tight throughout the second half as Lake Forest never led by more than six and the Vikings' biggest lead was five points.
The Vikings trailed 65-60 when Meyer connected on a pair of free throws with 2:04 left in regulation. After a Foresters miss, Crandall drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 65-65 with 1:30 remaining.
After an offensive foul on the Foresters, Brooks drilled a 3-pointer to give the Vikings a 68-65 edge with just 59 seconds left. Maurissa Edwards hit a pair of free throws to pull Lake Forest to 68-67 with 38 seconds remaining.
The teams traded missed shots, and Meyer was fouled after grabbing a rebound with four seconds left. Meyer converted one free throw to give Lawrence a 69-67 lead.
The Foresters took a timeout and advanced the ball to the frontcourt. Katie Neher took the inbounds pass and hit a baseline jumper to tie the game at the buzzer and force overtime.
The long ball gave the Vikings the advantage early in the overtime. Lake Forest led 71-70 when Lydia Lueck buried a 3-pointer to give Lawrence a 73-71 edge. After a Neher miss, Crandall drained a triple, and the Vikings led 75-71.
Lake Forest turned it over on the next possession, and Brooks hit a 3-pointer to put the Vikings up 78-71 with 2:58 left in the overtime. Brooks was then fouled while shooting a 3-pointer on the next possession. She hit all three free throws for an 81-73 edge.
It was a parade to the foul line after that as Lawrence went 8-for-12 from the stripe in the final 1:39 to seal the victory.
The victory was Lawrence's third consecutive win over Lake Forest. That marks the first time in a series that dates back to 1975 that Lawrence has beaten the Foresters three straight times.
