McCue, Cloutier lead Vikings to romp over Concordia

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team put on a dominating performance Friday night in an 8-0 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Concordia University Wisconsin at the Appleton Ice Center.
Two first-year forwards collected their first collegiate goals and their first collegiate hat tricks in the victory. Rookie Miles McCue scored four goals becoming just the fifth player in school history to score at least four goals in a game. Rookie Carter Cloutier also scored his first career goal and collected a hat trick as well.
Rookie goaltender Nolan Mahaffey posted his first career shutout as he made 24 saves.
Jack Michels collected three assists, and Ethan Beaumont and Cody Brekke both added a pair of assists.
Lawrence (3-3-1, 2-2-1 NCHA) jumped on Concordia (2-3-0, 1-2-0) early as the Vikings scored just over a minute into the game on McCue's first career goal. McCue made it 2-0 just 1:42 into the second period when he scored on the power play.
The Vikings then broke the game open with two more goals in the next seven minutes. Cloutier picked up his first career goal at the 4:50 mark of the second, and McCue then completed his hat trick with a goal at the 8:33 mark for a 4-0 lead.
McCue then added a fourth goal, a power-play tally, at the 13:38 mark for a 5-0 advantage. The Vikings went 2-for-2 on the power play for the night.
Cloutier closed out the second period with his second goal of the night at the 17:22 mark for a 6-0 lead heading to the third.
The Falcons pulled goaltender Blake Hazelton when they were on the power play in the third period, and the Vikings cashed in on that opportunity. Cloutier scored a short-hander off a feed from Olver DeCroock for a 7-0 lead at the 7:27 mark.
Will Crull got his first goal of the season at the 16:37 mark to complete Lawrence's scoring.
The Vikings posted a 45-24 edge in shots and held Concordia to just four shots on goal in the decisive second period.
Lawrence goes for a series sweep on Saturday when the Vikings play at Concordia.
