Big second quarter leads Lawrence past Yellowjackets

    APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team went on a big scoring run in the second quarter Friday and rolled to a 63-45 nonconference victory over UW-Superior at Alexander Gymnasium.
    The Vikings put together a 20-3 scoring outburst to seize control and led 37-20 at the half.
    Maggie Culver and Mallory Meyer scored 13 points apiece to pace the Vikings (3-1). Culver also added a game-high eight rebounds, and Meyer picked up two steals and two rebounds.
    Rookie guard Charlotte Brennan added 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Vikings. Lydia Lueck and Libby Crandall both picked up eight points for Lawrence.
    No one scored in double figures for Superior (1-2), which was held to just 28.1 percent shooting from the floor. Lawrence also forced the Yellowjackets into 26 turnovers.
    The Vikings led 14-13 with 2:20 left in the opening quarter when Lawrence pulled away. Meyer started the run with six straight points to give Lawrence a 20-13 lead early in the second quarter. 
    After a Superior layup, Karly Beck countered with a layup for the Vikings. Crandall then drained a 3-pointer and hit a jumper for a 27-15 advantage.
    Culver later went on a 7-0 burst of her own with a free throw and back-to-back 3-pointers for a 34-16 lead with 2:40 left in the second quarter. Nikola Kuzmanovic then converted a three-point play to put the Vikings up 37-16.
    Lawrence pushed the lead to 23 points multiple times in the third quarter and led 54-31 heading to the fourth. The Vikings led by as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter and Superior never got closer than 15 points in the final period.
