MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team put together a gritty effort Friday night on the road and picked up a point with a 2-2 overtime tie with MSOE at the Kern Center.
MSOE won the shootout 3-1 to earn a second point in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
The Vikings trailed 2-0 midway through the second period, but Lawrence cashed in on a power-play chance to cut the lead in half.Â
After MSOE's Preston Park got sent off for high sticking at the 13:46 mark, Lawrence's
Cory Checco scored on the ensuing power play. With assists from
Kyle Gierman and
Jayden Jensen, Checco scored at 14:37 to cut the lead to 2-1.Â
The Vikings were still down one when Cole Beilke was whistled for tripping at the 12:03 mark of the third period. It didn't take long for Lawrence to cash in when
Cole Schneider scored just 12 seconds later off assists from Gierman and Jensen to tie the game at 2-2.
Lawrence went 2-for-4 on the power play in the game. MSOE had scored on its first power play of the night, but Lawrence killed off the next seven penalties and the Raiders finished 1-for-8 on the man-advantage.Â
The Vikings had to kill off a penalty just to get to overtime when
Ethan Beaumont was called for checking from behind with just 1:32 left in regulation. Lawrence got to OT and then killed off the final 28 seconds of the penalty with the teams skating 4-on-3.Â
For the rest of the overtime, it went back to 3-on-3, and Lawrence looked like it might have the game won when
Miles McCue got a breakway. McCue's shot got past MSOE goaltender Austin Schwab but clanged off the pipe. MSOE had a two-man breakaway in the final minute of overtime, but Beilke's shot sailed wide.Â
The game went to a shootout, and MSOE made all three attempts to secure the extra point with a 3-1 shootout win.
  Lawrence goaltender
Owen Carlson was outstanding in net as he stopped 48 shots. Schwab finished with 25 saves for the Raiders.
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday night at the Appleton Ice Center.
