Lawrence drops heartbreaker to Lake Forest

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's hockey team dominated long stretches of Saturday's Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Appleton Ice Center, but Lake Forest College emerged with a 3-2 victory.
The Vikings posted a 37-20 edge in shots for the game, and that included a 17-2 Lawrence advantage in shots on goal in the opening period.
Despite the first-period dominance by the Vikings, the game was scoreless heading to the second period.
Lawrence had just killed off a two-man advantage for Lake Forest when the Vikings got their first goal. Cody Brekke scored off assists from Carter Cloutier and Ethan Beaumont at the 5:40 mark of the second for a 1-0 lead.
Lake Forest quickly tied the game on Ryan Antonakis just 28 seconds later.
The Foresters took a 2-1 lead on Colin Bella's goal at the 2:05 mark of the third. Lawrence came back to tie it after Lake Forest's Tyler Nielsen was sent off for interference at the 10:42 mark.
The Vikings got a great setup off a face-off, and Cole Schneider scored at 11:08 to tie the game at 2-2. Cory Checco and Cloutier both picked up assists on Schneider's goal.
Bella gave Lake Forest the lead for good when he scored with just 1:34 left. The Vikings pulled goaltender Nolan Mahaffey in the final minute but were unable to score.
Mahaffey made 17 saves for Lawrence, and Kohl Reddy stopped 35 shots for the Foresters.
