APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team dropped a controversial 77-76 Midwest Conference overtime decision to Cornell College on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.
The Vikings trailed by one with 2.2 seconds left and inbounded the ball to rookie guard
Johnny Semany, who collided with Cornell's Zach Ingle near mid-court. As the two made contact, Semany fired up a desperation 3-pointer that was off the mark at the buzzer.Â
Despite the contact, no foul was called on the play to the dismay of the partisan crowd and the Lawrence coaches and players.
 Â
Adnan Sarancic led Lawrence with 18 points and added six rebounds before fouling out. Semany added 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Elliot Jung, who was honored before the game on Senior Day, added 10 points and four assists for the Vikings (9-15, 6-9 MWC).Â

Lawrence raced out of the gate and had a 12-2 lead after Jung's layup less than five minutes into the contest. The Vikings stretched the lead to 23-9 after Kaznikov drained a 3-pointer with 11:36 left in the first half. The Vikings would lead by as many as 15 in the first half before Cornell chipped away at the lead.Â
The Rams finished the first half on a 26-12 run and cut the lead to 39-38 at the half.
Lawrence held onto the lead until a pair of free throws put the Rams up 61-60. The Vikings trailed by two when a basket from Sarancic and a 3-pointer from Kaznikov put Lawrence up 67-64 with 2:23 remaining.Â
Neither team scored again until Izic Mackey's layup cut the lead to 67-66 with 10 seconds remaining. The Rams fouled Semany, who made both free throws to give Lawrence a 69-66 lead with eight seconds left. Magnani then hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.
The Vikings were down by two in the overtime when Jung's driving layup led to a three-point play and gave Lawrence a 76-75 lead with 36 seconds left. Cornell's Jeremy Durdan missed a layup, and the Vikings grabbed the rebound with 11 seconds left. Lawrence missed both free throws, and Magnani went to the basket on the ensuing possession.
