Lawrence trims Foresters in thriller

APPLETON, Wis. -- Arnav Jain scored a career-high 23 points Wednesday to lead the Lawrence University men's basketball team to a 72-69 Midwest Conference victory over Lake Forest College at Alexander Gymnasium.
The Vikings also got three key defensive stops in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.
Jain, a rookie whose previous best this season was 13 points on two occasions, went 8-for-17 from the floor, including 5-for-12 from 3-point range. Matthew Kaznikov added 15 points and three rebounds for the Vikings (9-14, 6-8 MWC).
Lawrence's Elliot Jung finished with 15 points, including two on a steal and dunk, and added five assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals. Adnan Sarancic picked up 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Parker Prahl grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go with four points and a pair of assists.
Alex Knight and Johnny Roeser were the offense for Lake Forest (10-12, 7-6). Knight had 19 points and Roeser added 18.
The game was tight from the opening tip, but Lawrence managed to built a 57-49 lead after Jain hit a 3-pointer with 12:22 left in the contest. Lake Forest slowly reeled the Vikings back in and took the lead back at 67-66 on Elijah Bull's layup with 5:49 remaining.
Both teams played lockdown defense from that point before Jain drilled a huge 3-pointer with 1:31 left to give Lawrence a 69-67 advantage. Knight, who had a big second half, tied the game with a driving layup with 1:16 left.
Lake Forest was swarming the Vikings on the ensuing possession, but Nick Hesch's forced jumper from just outside the foul line found the bottom of the net to give Lawrence a 71-69 edge with 42 ticks remaining.
The Vikings then got a stop when Rocco Ronzio's short shot caromed off the rim with 23 seconds left, and Prahl ripped down the rebound. The Foresters had fouls to give before Lawrence got in the bonus and committed three fouls before Kaznikov went to the line with 15 seconds left.
Kaznikov made the first free throw to give Lawrence a 72-69 edge before missing the second. The Foresters went back to Knight on the drive but his floater from the baseline missed everything, and Prahl was there again for the rebound. The Foresters fouled Jung with five seconds left, but he missed the front end of the bonus and Lake Forest grabbed the rebound.
The Vikings also had a foul to give and fouled the Foresters with three seconds left. Lake Forest inbounded the ball from in front of the Lawrence bench, and passed the ball to Zach Foster in the frontcourt. Foster got off a 35-foot 3-pointer before the buzzer sounded, but the ball caromed off the rim to give the Vikings the victory.
Lawrence plays its final home game of the season on Saturday when the Vikings host Cornell College.
