Vikings can't catch Carthage

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team fell behind early and dropped a 12-4 nonconference decision to Carthage College in five innings on Friday.
Carthage (4-6) scored eight times in the bottom of the second inning to seize control. The Vikings cut that lead in half in the top of the fifth before Carthage matched them in the bottom half of the frame to end the game.
Mattigan Haller went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple and a run scored for the Vikings (0-6). Adrie Villa went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a run for Lawrence, and Mikayla Jeneske doubled and drove in a run.
Carthage led 8-0 when Lawrence scored four times in the fifth. Haller led off with a double, and Jeneske doubled to put runners at second and third. After Gillian Guerriero's sacrifice fly scored Haller, Janessa Gonzalez followed with a single to score Jeneske to trim the lead to 8-2.
Villa picked up a run-scoring single to plate Gonzelez, and Kourtney Mercer singled to score Jordan Wallin-Swanson to slice the edge to 8-4.
Carthage answered with four runs of its own to close out the contest.
Wallin-Swanson made the start and took the loss for the Vikings.
