Vikings walk away with win over New England

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team rode a big sixth inning Saturday to post a 12-4 nonconference win over New England College.
The Vikings scored eight times in the sixth as New England issued seven walks and hit a batter in the frame.
Lawrence racked up 11 hits as Janessa Gonzalez and Jordan Wallin-Swanson both went 2-for-3. Mattigan Haller had a triple, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Vikings, and Kourtney Mercer and Xiomara Rueda-Marshall both drove in a pair of runs.
Lawrence (1-6) tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Wallin-Swanson tripled and scored on Mercer's single. The Vikings then scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Lizzy Angemi got that rally started with a single, and an error put Gonzalez aboard. Haller then tripled to score both runners, but she came home to score later on a throwing error.
The Pilgrims tied it with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Lawrence sent 13 batters to the plate to close out the game via the eight-run rule.
Wallin-Swanson got things started with a single before Mercer walked. Rueda-Marshall doubled to score one, and Laney Martens followed with two-run triple for a 7-4 lead. The Vikings later had a runner on with one out when Haller, Mikayla Jeneske, Gillian Guerriero, Wallin-Swanson, Mercer and Rueda-Marshall all drew walks with the final three free passes driving in runs to give Lawrence an 11-4 lead.
Martens returned to the plate and was hit by a pitch to score pinch-runner Khayla Santiago to end the game.
Angemi made the start for the Vikings and was solid over five innings. She allowed two runs on five hits, struck out four and walked two. Rueda-Marshall picked up the win with one inning of relief work.
