Five-run inning leads Vikings past Oberlin

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team posted a five-run fifth inning Tuesday and rode that to a 7-5 nonconference victory over Oberlin College.
The Vikings pounded out 12 hits against two Oberlin pitchers as four players collected multiple hits.
Mikayla Jeneske went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and a pair of runs batted in for the Vikings (2-9). Gillian Guerriero went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs for Lawrence.
Jordan Wallin-Swanson also went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Vikings, and Janessa Gonzalez was also 2-for-4.
Kourtney Mercer picked up her first collegiate victory for the Vikings. Mercer went five innings and allowed six hits and two runs while walking a pair. Lizzy Angemi worked the final two innings to close out the victory.
Oberlin (1-6) led 1-0 when Lawrence took the lead in the top of the fourth. After Mattigan Haller singled to start the innings, Jeneske followed with a run-scoring triple to tie the game. Guerriero's sacrifice fly scored Jeneske and the Vikings led 2-1.
Lawrence then broke the game open in the fifth. Mary Boyle started the inning with a double, and Xiomara Rueda-Marshall reached on an error. Gonzalez's bunt single then loaded the bases.
After an out, Haller's sacrifice fly scored Boyle for a 3-1 lead. Jeneske followed with a single up the middle, and Rueda-Marshall came home for a 4-1 edge. Guerriero then singled to score Gonzalez for a 5-1 lead. Wallin-Swanson then delivered a two-run single to score Guerriero and Jeneske for a 7-1 advantage.
Oberlin got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, and Lawrence had to hold off a Yeowoman rally in the seventh. Oberlin scored three times and had two runners in scoring position, but Angemi got a popup and a groundout to end the contest.
Katie Austin made the start and allowed nine hits through 4.2 innings to take the loss.
