Lawrence sees Titans break close game open late

OSHKOSH, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team fell 8-2 on Sunday in a nonconference game against UW-Oshkosh at the Rec Plex.
The game was scoreless until Oshkosh scored three times in the bottom of the third inning. Lawrence trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fifth, but the Titans scored five times in the bottom half of the inning to pull away.
Lawrence collected nine hits, just three less than Oshkosh, but the Vikings stranded nine runners in the contest.
Adrie Villa went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Vikings, and Mikayla Jeneske went 2-for-4. Khayla Santiago drove in both runs for Lawrence.
Kourtney Mercer made the start and allowed eight runs, only four earned, on nine hits over five innings. She struck out one and walked five. Sydney Nemetz allowed seven hits and two runs over five innings to get the win.
Oshkosh led 3-0 when the Vikings sliced into that advantage in the fifth inning.
Jordan Wallin-Swanson started the rally for the Vikings with a single. Villa then delivered a one-out single and the runners moved up on a groundout. Santiago then reached on a ground ball and both runners scored to trim the lead to 3-2.
Oshkosh then struck for five runs in the bottom half of the frame to stretch the lead. The Vikings put two runners aboard in both the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to score.
