Big inning derails Vikings at Illinois College

    JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- The Lawrence University baseball team looked to be in control on Sunday at Illinois College, but the Blueboys posted a 12-run inning en route to a 21-17 Midwest Conference victory.
    Lawrence led 10-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth when Illinois College scored three times to tighten things up. Lawrence answered with a run in the top of the sixth for an 11-5 edge, but Illinois College scored 12 in the bottom half of the inning for a 17-12 lead.
    Lawrence managed to cut the lead back to 19-17 before the Blueboys held on for the win to take two of three in the series.
    Edan Perez went 3-for-5 with a double, five runs batted in and two runs scored for the Vikings (8-15, 4-8 MWC). Jacob Charon was 2-for-2 with a home run, walked twice, scored three runs and drove in a pair for Lawrence. Lead-off hitter Parker Knoll went 3-for-6 with a homer, scored four runs and drove in a run, and Luke Miles was 2-for-4 with a double, scored three runs and drove in two for Lawrence.
    The Vikings owned a 15-11 advantage in hits in the game.
    Lawrence starter Preston Anderson went 4.1 innings and exited in the fifth after giving up six hits and five runs while striking out four and walking four. Lawrence's seven pitchers combined to walk 11 batters and hit eight more. Of those 19 batters, 12 came around to score.
    The Vikings got on the board with five in the third with Perez picking up a key two-run single. The Vikings added five more in the fourth as Perez delivered a two-run double to help Lawrence to a 10-2 lead. 
    After Charon hit his seventh homer of the season in the top of the sixth, Illinois College (10-18, 6-6) scored a dozen with the help three hits, five walks and four hit batters. Lawrence got one back in the seventh when Knoll homered and then drew closer in the eighth. The Vikings scored five times in the inning with Miles picking up a two-run double to trim the lead to 19-17. 
    The Vikings got a runner on but didn't threaten in the ninth.
