Vikings pull away for doubleheader split at Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team rode the solid pitching of Michael Duttlinger and an 11-hit attack Wednesday in the nightcap to secure a Midwest Conference doubleheader split against Beloit College at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.
Lawrence won the second game 9-5 after Beloit took the opener 12-5.
In the nightcap, Duttlinger picked up his first win of the season after allowing four hits and just one earned run through six innings. He struck out two and walked four. Shane Foley pitched the final three innings to record his second save of the season.
Lawrence's Jacob Charon continues to swing a hot bat as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Charon is hitting .442 since the Vikings returned from their spring break trip to Florida and is now at .326 for the season.
Lead-off hitter Parker Knoll, hitting a torrid .463 since coming back from Florida, went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs for the Vikings. Nick Heerde went 2-for-4 and drove in a run and Quinn Berglin also went 2-for-4. Mitchell Sandleback and Luke Miles both scored a pair of runs for the Vikings.
Lawrence (9-16, 5-9 MWC) manufactured runs in the first and third and added a run on three hits in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The Vikings tacked on a run in the seventh when Charon drove in Miles with a single for a 4-2 lead. Beloit closed to 4-3 in the eighth, but the Vikings broke it open in the ninth.
Miles was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Knoll followed with a bunt single. Sandleback reached on an error, and Miles scored for a 5-3 lead. Edan Perez's sacrifice fly scored Knoll to push the lead to 6-3. Charon smacked a run-scoring single to plate Sandleback and the lead grew to 7-3. A stolen base and wild pitch scored Charon, and Heerde's single scored Taylor Freeman for a 9-3 edge.
The Bucs (21-8, 14-3) scored twice in the bottom half of the inning, but Foley struck out Brett Kiger to end the threat. Foley allowed three runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out two and walking one.
In the opener, Beloit erupted for nine runs in the third on seven hits to grab a six-run lead.
Sandleback went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI for the Vikings. Freeman went 2-for-5 and drove in a run, and Jake Land homered for Lawrence.
Elden Santana allowed nine runs, just three earned, in 2.2 innings and took the loss for the Vikings.
