EUREKA, Ill. -- The Lawrence University softball team used quality pitching and a big inning Sunday to post a nonconference doubleheader split with Eureka College at Sweitzer Field.
Lawrence took the nightcap 5-1 after Eureka squeezed out a 2-1 victory in the first game.
In the second game, Lawrence used pitchers
Xiomara Rueda-Marshall and
Lizzy Angemi to grab the victory. Rueda-Marshall worked 4.2 innings of relief to get the win. She allowed no runs on two hits, struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Angemi made the start and worked 2.1 innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
 Â
Mikayla Jeneske went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Vikings.
Janessa Gonzalez was 2-for-4, scored two runs and drove in a run for Lawrence.
Mattigan Haller and
Gillian Guerriero both went 2-for-3. Guerriero doubled and scored a pair of runs, and Haller had two doubles, scored a run and drove in a run.
Lawrence (4-16) got on the board in the first when Gonzalez reached on error, stole second and scored on Jeneske's single with the help of another Eureka error.Â
The Vikings scored three times in the third with the help of four hits. Guerriero started the inning with a single, and Haller followed with a run-scoring double for a 2-0 lead. Gonzalez then singled, and a throwing error scored Haller to put the Vikings up 3-0. After Jeneske doubled,
Jordan Wallin-Swanson grounded out to score Gonzalez for a 4-0 edge.
Eureka scored once in the bottom of the third, but the Vikings got that run back in the top of the fourth. Guerriero started that rally with a two-out double, and Haller followed with a walk. Gonzalez came through with a clutch single to score Guerriero and put Lawrence up 5-1.
In the opener, Eureka (3-12) scratched out single runs in the first and fifth. Lawrence scored in the fourth without a hit when Haller walked, stole second and third and scored on
Kourtney Mercer's sacrifice fly.Â
Rueda-Marshall took the loss despite allowing just five hits and one earned run over six innings. She struck out three and walked two.
