Lawrence takes series finale from Scots

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team got a strong pitching performance from Preston Anderson and a power surge from Edan Perez on Sunday to pace an 8-3 Midwest Conference win over Monmouth College at Whiting Field.
Anderson went six innings and allowed only four hits and two earned runs. He struck out five and walked two to even his record on the season at 1-1.
Perez went 3-for-5 with a homer and a double, two runs driven in and two runs scored. Eight of Lawrence's nine hitters picked up at least one hit in the contest, and Quinn Berglin also drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.
Lawrence (10-18, 6-11 MWC) took the lead in the series finale in the first when Mitchell Sandleback walked and scored when Perez smacked his seventh homer of the season for a 2-0 advantage.
The Vikings then tacked on three more runs in the third and it was Sandleback and Perez starting the rally. Sandleback singled and Perez followed with a double. After Taylor Freeman walked, Nick Heerde walked to bring Sandleback home. William Polanco then lined out to Monmouth pitcher Cameron Anderson, who tried to double off Perez at third. He threw wildly, and Perez and Freeman both scored for a 5-0 lead.
Monmouth (12-19, 7-12) scored once in the fourth and twice in the sixth to climb back into it, but the Vikings put the game away with three runs in the seventh.
Freeman started the inning with a single, and Polanco then doubled off the fence in left. Berglin followed with a two-run double down the left field line to score both runners for a 7-3 edge. William Zatkowski followed with a single to score Berglin and Lawrence was up by five.
That cushion was enough for reliever Brandon Brust, who worked the final three innings for the Vikings. He allowed just one hit, struck out four and walked three to pick up his first career save.
Lawrence returns to action Tuesday when the Vikings host Beloit College in the final game of their season series.
