Records tumble in Vikings' sweep of Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. -- The Lawrence University baseball team ran roughshod over the Knox College pitching staff on Saturday in a Midwest Conference doubleheader sweep at Blodgett Field.
Lawrence rolled to a 29-5 victory in the opener and took the nightcap 16-2. Both games ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
In the first game, Lawrence broke three team offensive records. The 29 runs topped the record of 24, which had been done three times, the last vs. Iowa Wesleyan in 2018. Lawrence's 26 hits also broke the mark of 25, which had been done twice previously. Lawrence's 26 runs batted in topped the record of 23 set against Iowa Wesleyan in 2018.
Lawrence belted five homers in the game and finished with eight extra-base hits.
Lawrence's Edan Perez went 4-for-4 with three doubles and scored a school-record six runs. The six runs ties the school record set by Sam Kossow vs. Carroll University in 2014. Parker Knoll went 3-for-7 with a grand slam and two runs scored for the Vikings.
Ben Gutkowski also went 4-for-4 for the Vikings and scored three runs. Jacob Charon went 2-for-2 with a homer, scored two runs and drove in five, and Zach Leslie also went 2-for-2 with a homer, scored four runs and drove in five.
Lawrence's Mitchell Sandleback was 3-for-4, scored five runs and drove in a run. William Polanco went 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBIs and a pair of runs scored, and Taylor Freeman went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Alex Tanaka also smacked a homer in his only at-bat of the game.
Quinn Berglin improved to 3-0 on the season as he took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Berglin allowed five hits, just one earned run, struck out nine and walked three.
Lawrence was off to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first as Charon delivered a two-run single and Leslie blasted a three-run homer. The Vikings tacked on three more in the second when Charon hit a three-run homer for a 9-0 lead.
Polanco's two-run homer highlighted a four-run fourth inning as the Vikings built a 13-2 lead. Lawrence added four more in the fifth with Polanco picking up a two-run single for a 17-2 lead.
Lawrence then cracked the game wide open with 10 runs in the sixth. The Vikings had seven hits in the inning, and the big blow was Knoll's grand slam as Lawrence pulled out to a 27-2 lead. Tanaka then belted a two-run homer in the seventh to complete the scoring for Lawrence.
In the second game, Lawrence put together a 17-hit attack and scored in each of the first three innings to build a 10-2 lead.
Lawrence led 4-2 when the Vikings scored six times in the third. Polanco ripped a two-run double, and Perez picked up a run-scoring single in the inning.
Lawrence added two more runs in the fifth as Knoll hit a lead-off homer, and Leslie smacked a run-scoring single. The Vikings completed the scoring with three more in the seventh as Jake Land hammered a two-run double, and Freeman ripped a run-scoring double.
Knoll finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Polanco was 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Perez went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two runs driven in. Land finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two driven in, and Freeman was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Cam Ruth went the distance for the Vikings to even his mark on the season at 2-2. Ruth allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked four.
