Vikings split doubleheader with Monmouth

    GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team took the opener against Monmouth College on Saturday and settled for a doubleheader split at King Field.
    The Vikings rolled to an 11-3 victory in five innings in the first game, and Monmouth took a 7-2 win in the nightcap.
    In the opener, Janessa Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two runs batted in for Lawrence (5-19, 1-3 MWC). Mikayla Jeneske went 3-for-3, scored a run and drove in a pair for the Vikings.
    Mattigan Haller went 2-for-4, scored three runs and drove in a run, and Gillian Guerriero went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs for the Vikings.
    Xiomara Rueda-Marshall turned in a solid performance in the circle to pick up the win. She allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out one and walking one.
    Lawrence jumped on top in the bottom of the first when Haller singled and scored on Gonzalez's triple. Jeneske followed with a single to score Gonzalez, and the Vikings led 2-0. Lawrence pushed the lead 4-1 in the second as Haller and Gonzalez both had run-scoring singles.
    The Vikings tacked on a run in the fourth and led 5-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth. The Vikings exploded for six runs on five hits to end the game via the run rule. Adrie Villa and Jeneske both had run-scoring singles in the inning, and Jordan Wallin-Swanson proved the walk-off with a two-run single to score Laney Martens and Jeneske to push the lead to eight runs.
    In the second game, Abby Leber shut down Lawrence's attack. Leber went the distance, allowing two runs on three hits. She struck out nine and didn't walk a batter.
    Haller went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Vikings in the second game.
