Lawrence blanks Scots in conference opener

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's soccer team got its Midwest Conference season off to a good start Friday with a 2-0 victory over Monmouth College on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
The Vikings scored once in each half while dominating play throughout.
Lawrence got on the board in the 14th minute when first-year player Hannah Kalt took a pass from Paige Ference and found the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead at 13:36.
The score stayed that way until later in the second half when the Vikings struck again. Senior Kaitlyn Khazen got the scoring play started with a pass to another first-year player, Kylie Grimes. Grimes blasted the ball past Monmouth goalkeeper Anna Caster for a 2-0 edge at the 74:37 mark.
Lawrence goalkeeper Audri Klionsky made four saves to earn the shutout, her third of the season. Caster finished with seven saves for the Scots.
The Vikings posted a 24-9 edge in shots over Monmouth, and that included a 15-4 advantage in the second half.
