APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's soccer team settled for a 2-2 tie with Monmouth College on Saturday in the Midwest Conference opener on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
The Vikings had the better of the scoring chances, but they were denied by the post twice, and Monmouth saved a penalty kick.
Lawrence jumped on top in the 23rd minute with a nice combination to set up the goal.
Evan Toth's pass went to
Ian Salim, who directed it into the box for
Alexander Resendiz. His header found the back of the net and Lawrence led 1-0 at the 22:45 mark.
Monmouth tied the score three minutes later, but the Vikings grabbed the lead back later in the half.
Rodrigo Angulo's blast from outside the penalty box was in the upper corner of the net, and Lawrence led 2-1 at the 40:42 mark.
The lead could have been even bigger, but Monmouth goalkeeper Christopher Zavala saved Angulo's penalty kick. Angulo got to the rebound, but that shot caromed off the post. Lawrence nearly expanded its lead early in the second half, but another shot hit off the post and deflected away.
Monmouth tied the score on a quick corner kick. After Lawrence goalkeeper
Nason Lancina ventured to the edge of the box for the ball, it ended up going out of bounds. Monmouth's Mathew Hipolito took a quick corner kick before Lancina could get back into position and scored at the 56:57 mark.Â
Lancina, who played the second half, made four saves, and starter
Ethan Uribe had three saves in the first half for Lawrence. Zavala made five saves for Monmouth.
