GALESBURG, Ill. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team picked up its first Midwest Conference victory of the season Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Knox College at Memorial Gymnasium.
Lawrence toppled the Prairie Fire 25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20.
The Vikings were led by a superlative effort from sophomore
Mikala Seymour, who pounded out a career-high 14 kills against just two errors in 25 attacks for a robust .480 hitting percentage. The 14 kills tops Seymour's previous high of 10, which was set earlier this season.
Lawrence setter
Cora Linos piled up 31 assists while adding 11 kills, three aces and nine digs.
Hilirie McLaughlin added nine kills and two aces for the Vikings, and
Callista Lo had seven.
Lo also led the Vikings with 20 digs, and
Dana Mestey added 17 while
Taylor Hughes picked up 14.
Lawrence trailed 14-13 in the opening set before rattling off seven consecutive points, capped by a Lions kill, for a 20-14 advantage. After a Knox kill, Lawrence ripped off five straight points, capped by a Linos ace, to end the first set.
Lawrence built a six-point lead in the second set, but Knox rallied to tie the match at 20-20. The Prairie Fire pulled ahead 23-22, but a Knox service error, a McLaughlin kill and a Knox attack error delivered the second set to Lawrence.
After Knox won the third set, Lawrence took control early in the fourth set. The Vikings had a 7-5 lead and then reeled off eight consecutive points to take command with a 15-5 lead. Knox would eventually trim the lead to 24-20 before a Seymour kill finished the set and the match.
