Beloit holds off Vikings

BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team rallied several times in the second half Tuesday, but Beloit College held on for a 71-63 Midwest Conference victory at Flood Arena.
Lawrence trailed by 10 at the half, cut the lead to five twice in the second half before the Bucs pushed it back to a double-digit lead. Lawrence closed to within six several times in the final minutes but could get no closer.
Lawrence's Casey Schoenecker scored a game-high 20 points as he went 8-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the foul line. Schoenecker also grabbed five rebounds.
Hogan Demovsky added 17 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Vikings (4-15, 2-8 MWC). Nicholas Gouriotis added 10 points and three rebounds, and Adnan Sarancic had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Lawrence.
The Bucs pulled out to a 34-24 lead at the half, but Lawrence opened the second half on an 8-3 burst. Back-to-back baskets from Schoenecker pulled Lawrence to 37-32 with 17:54 left.
Beloit quickly pushed the lead back to 11, but two baskets by Schoenecker, sandwiched around a pair of Demovsky free throws, pulled Lawrence back to 43-38 with 13:36 left.
Beloit built the lead back to as many as 17, but the Vikings put on a late push. Trailing 66-53, Lawrence got two free throws from Schoenecker, a fastbreak layup from Demovsky and a Schoenecker putback cut the lead to 66-59 with 43 seconds left.
The Bucs made one free throw on the next possession, but Demovsky was fouled and converted a pair of free throws to trim the lead to 67-61. Beloit then made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to seal the victory.
Semaj Roy led Beloit (12-7, 6-5) with 20 points.
