Vikings rally late to nip Beloit

    BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team rallied in the final minutes Tuesday and posted a 52-51 Midwest Conference win over Beloit College at Flood Arena.
    Lawrence trailed by five with four minutes left, but outscored the Bucs 11-5 over the final four minutes to snatch the victory.
    Mallory Meyer scored a game-high 19 points for the Vikings and added five rebounds and three steals. 
    Lawrence's Maggie Culver posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Both Culver and Meyer hit a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory.
    Caroline Sharpe came off the bench to score eight points and hit a huge 3-pointer that sparked Lawrence's late rally.
    In a hard-fought contest, Lawrence carved out a 22-16 lead at the half. Lawrence held Beloit to 7-for-23 shooting in the opening half, but the Bucs heated up and went 12-for-21 after the break.
    The Vikings (12-7, 6-4 MWC) built a six-point lead at 34-28 before Beloit trimmed the margin to 34-32 heading to the fourth quarter. The Bucs surged to the lead early in the fourth quarter and grabbed their largest advantage at 46-41 with 4:00 left in the contest.
    Lawrence responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead back. Meyer started it with a free throw before Sharpe hit a big 3-pointer with 3:07 left to cut the margin to 46-45. Following a Beloit miss, Meyer was fouled and made both free throws to give Lawrence a 47-46 lead with 2:28 left.
    The teams then traded misses before Lawrence's Charlotte Brennan was fouled with 42 seconds left. The first-year guard made one free throw to give Lawrence a 48-46 lead. Beloit's Elizabeth Kalk made a jumper to tie it at 48-48 with 34 seconds left.
    Brennan ran down the shot clock before driving and dishing to Culver, who was fouled going to the basket with six seconds left. Culver made both free throws to put the Vikings up 50-48.
    The Bucs called timeout and advanced the ball to the frontcourt. They inbounded to Hannah Welte, but her 3-pointer from the wing was off the mark. Meyer grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 3.3 seconds left. 
    Meyer made both free throws and the Vikings led 52-48. Following another timeout, Beloit got a 3-pointer from Kalk to cut the lead to one with 0.7 seconds left. Lawrence got the ball inbounds to Sharpe as the final tenths ticked off the clock.
    Lawrence was clutch from the line as the Vikings went 7-for-8 over the final 2:28. The Vikings were 16-for-20 for the game while Beloit finished 6-for-11 from the stripe.
    Johanna McNair led Beloit (7-12, 5-6) with 16 points.
