Lawrence comeback falls short at Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter Wednesday, but Knox College held on for a 62-60 Midwest Conference victory at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Vikings were down 11 with 6:40 left but cut the Knox lead to one before missing three consecutive shots from the floor in the final 1:29.
Maggie Culver led Lawrence (12-9, 6-6 MWC) with 19 points, and she added six rebounds, one assist and one steal. Lawrence's Emma Carlson played her first game of the season after returning from injury and made a big impact. Carlson came off the bench to score 14 points as she hit 7-of-12 shots from the floor. Carlson also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Mallory Meyer chipped in with eight points for the Vikings, and Charlotte Brennan had a team-high four assists.
Knox pulled away in the third quarter and built a 49-39 lead heading to the fourth. The Prairie Fire led by as many as 12 points and were up 57-46 with 6:40 left.
Meyer started an 8-0 Lawrence run with back-to-back jumpers, and Karly Beck then hit consecutive jumpers in the paint to cut the Knox lead to 57-54 with 2:57 remaining.
After a Knox basket, Carlson hit consecutive jumpers to cut the lead to 59-58 with 1:41 left. After a Knox turnover and a Lawrence miss, Nyah Daniels made a pair of free throws to push Knox's lead to 61-58.
The teams then traded missed shots, and Lawrence turned it over with 13 seconds left. The Vikings were forced to foul and sent Bria Medina to the line, and she converted one foul shot for a 62-58 lead with 10 seconds left.
The Vikings missed a 3-pointer, but Meyer was fouled with 4.6 seconds remaining. The Vikings needed to make the first free throw, intentionally miss the second and hope for a rebound and a 3-point attempt. Meyer missed both foul shots, and Culver hit a short jumper before the final buzzer to complete the scoring.
Daniels led Knox (15-5, 7-4) with 23 points.
Lawrence returns home for a critical game with Illinois College on Saturday.
