Vikings serve up win over Lake Forest

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team battled back in the second and third sets Tuesday and carved out a 3-0 Midwest Conference victory over Lake Forest College at Alexander Gymnasium.
The Vikings topped Lake Forest 25-16, 30-28, 25-16 to improve to 2-2 in league play.
Margaret Hahnke had a match-high 13 kills and picked up five aces, five digs, three assists and a block to pace the Vikings. Hazel Cook had a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs for Lawrence (8-17 overall).
Lawrence setter Cora Linos collected 19 assists to go with six kills, three aces and seven digs. Libero Daphne Piotrowski added nine digs for the Vikings.
The Vikings got off to a strong start in the opening set and went on an early 6-1 run to grab a 10-5 advantage. The Foresters pulled to within 13-12, but Lawrence went on a 9-2 run, which included a pair of aces from Linos, to end the set.
In a epic second set, Lake Forest jumped out to a 10-4 advantage. The Vikings got a pair of kills from Hahnke to help close the deficit to 10-9, but the Foresters stretched the lead back to 15-11. Lawrence then went on a 5-1 run, and Cook's ace tied the set at 17-17.
After Lake Forest went up 19-17, the Vikings ripped off six consecutive points with a pair of kills from Hahnke, an ace from Piotrowski and kills from Linos and Hilirie McLaughlin for a 23-17 advantage. Lake Forest came back to take a 25-24 lead, and the teams then swapped the lead before the Foresters tied the set at 28-28. Linos got a kill, and an attack error from the Foresters gave the Vikings the set and a 2-0 lead.
The Foresters jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the third set before Lawrence reeled off six consecutive points, including a kill and an ace from Linos, to tie the set at 12-12. After a point by the Foresters, Hahnke picked up a kill to tie the set at 13-13 and start a 9-0 Lawrence run. During that outburst, Hahnke posted five consecutive aces, and Cook's kill finished the run and gave Lawrence a 21-13 edge.
Lake Forest (4-16, 3-2) scored the next two points, but Lawrence collected four of the next five points and Cook finished off the match with a kill.
This was Lawrence's first win over Lake Forest since the 2017 season and the first 3-0 victory over the Foresters since the 2010 campaign.
