Rally comes up short at Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team rallied late Monday but came up short in a 67-62 nonconference loss to Marian University at Sadoff Gymnasium.
Lawrence (1-3) trailed by eight with just 1:37 remaining, but the Vikings cut the margin to two before Marian (5-0) hung on for the win.
Casey Schoenecker came off the bench to lead the Vikings with 15 points. Schoenecker went 6-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from the foul line, and he picked up three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.
Nathan Valentine added 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Vikings, and Jasper Padia had 12 points as he went 4-for-5 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from beyond the 3-point line.
Lawrence trailed 34-33 at the half, but the Sabres built that lead to as many as 10 points in the second half. Lawrence trimmed the advantage back to 59-56, but Alex Vassilakis scored the next five points for a 64-56 edge with 1:37 left.
Schoenecker answered with a layup, and Hogan Demovsky converted a pair of free throws with 1:08 remaining to cut the margin to 64-60. After a Marian miss, Valentine connected on a jumper to cut the lead to 64-62 with 30 seconds left.
The Vikings were forced to foul, and Brandon Adorno, who had a game-high 25 points, made two free throws with 20 seconds left for a 66-62 lead. Valentine missed a tough 3-pointer, and Marian grabbed the rebound to seal the win.
Lawrence returns to action on Wednesday when the Vikings face No. 15 Wisconsin Lutheran College at Alexander Gymnasium.
