Lawrence tames Tigers

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team nipped DePauw University 58-57 on Friday during the Daytona Beach Shootout at the Ocean Center.
Lawrence's Mallory Meyer had a critical three-point play with a minute left, and the Vikings added a pair of late free throws to earn the victory.
Kate Adams paced the Vikings (7-3) with 13 points and went 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Meyer finished with 12 points as she went 4-for-6 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the foul line. Lawrence's Charlotte Brennan added 11 points, and Maggie Culver had nine points and tied for team-high honors with five rebounds.
Lawrence trailed 32-28 at the half, but the Vikings went on a 10-2 run to grab the lead. Sophie Morey started the burst with a layup, and Meyer followed with a three-point play. After a Brennan layup, Adams buried a 3-pointer to put Lawrence up 41-36.
The Vikings led 45-42 heading to the fourth, but DePauw took a 47-45 lead early in the final period. An Adams 3-pointer gave Lawrence the lead back at 50-49, and the Vikings pushed the advantage to 53-49 with 4:39 left.
The Tigers pulled closer and regained the lead at 54-53 on a pair of Ava Hassel free throws with 2:02 remaining.
The teams traded misses before Meyer's layup with 1:03 left gave the Vikings a 55-54 edge. She was fouled on the play and converted the free throw for a 56-54 lead.
After a DePauw miss and a Lawrence turnover, the Vikings fouled Riley Mont with seven seconds remaining. Mont made the first free throw but missed the second, and Olivia Kesti grabbed the rebound for Lawrence.
The Tigers fouled Brennan with six seconds left, and she made both free throws to put Lawrence up 58-55. Ainsley Boras missed a 3-pointer for DePauw, but Mont corralled the rebound. Her putback was good, but it left the Tigers one point short of tying the contest.
Hassel led DePauw (4-4) with 12 points, and Mont had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Vikings take on Simpson College in Daytona Beach.
