Lawrence pummels North Park

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team pounded out 11 hits, including five for extra bases, in a 14-2 nonconference victory over North Park University on Friday.
Lawrence (3-5) trailed 2-0 before exploding for nine runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to close out North Park (2-7).
Mattigan Haller went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and five runs batted in to pace Lawrence. First-year infielder Zoe Doherty went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Khayla Santiago also went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.
Lawrence's Kourtney Mercer went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a run batted in, and Gillian Guerriero picked up a double, drove in two runs and scored twice.
Avery Chilson went the distance to even her record on the season at 2-2. She allowed two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked two.
Lawrence loaded the bases in the top of the fourth and got a sacrifice fly from Jordan Wallin-Swanson when the floodgates opened. Guerriero then smashed a two-run double, and Doherty picked up a bases-loaded walk. Haller then belted a three-run, bases-clearing double to give Lawrence a 7-2 lead. An error and a Mercer double brought home two more and Lawrence led 9-2.
Lawrence continued to pour it on in the fifth, and Chilson got things started with a run-scoring double. Doherty added a run-scoring single, and Haller ripped a two-run double to give the Vikings a 14-2 lead.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Vikings face Hamline University and Lakeland University.
