Lawrence blows past Storm

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Quinn Berglin tossed a gem Saturday, and the Lawrence University baseball team's offense came alive in a 10-1 nonconference win over Simpson College at Northeast Regional Park.
Berglin went seven strong innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. He scattered five hits while striking out a career-high 12 against just one walk. The 12 strikeouts eclipses Berglin's previous best of 11 at Grinnell College on April 2, 2022. He was just one strikeout shy of tying the Lawrence game record.
Lawrence (8-3) pounded out 12 hits, and Taylor Freeman led the way by going 3-for-5 with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored. Lawrence's Edan Perez went 2-for-4 with a triple, drove in three runs and scored twice.
Jacob Charon went 2-for-3, scored three times and drove in a run for the Vikings, and William Zatkowski went 2-for-4, drove in two and scored once. Rookie Nathan Depew went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in a run.
Lawrence broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third, the big hit in the inning was Perez's two-run triple.
Simpson (7-8) picked up a run in the fifth, but Lawrence struck for three runs in the sixth. Freeman had a run-scoring single in the sixth, and Zatkowski picked up an RBI double.
The Vikings stretched the lead to 8-1 with two more runs in the seventh as Zatkowski and Depew both collected run-scoring singles. Lawrence added two more runs in the eighth on RBI singles from Charon and Freeman.
Simpson's Mitchell Roeder pitched the first 5.1 innings and took the loss. He allowed five runs on six hits, struck out eight and walked one.
Lawrence gets two days off before returning to action against Williams College on March 19.
