CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team generated multiple scoring opportunities Saturday against Hamline University but managed just one run in a 5-1 nonconference setback to the Pipers.
Lawrence collected eight hits, including three extra-base hits, but crossed the plate just once. Hamline finished the day with nine hits against two Lawrence pitchers.
  Rookie third baseman
Zoe Doherty paced the Lawrence offense by going 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored from the lead-off spot in the order. Five other players picked up one hit apiece, including
Mattigan Haller and
Jordan Wallin-Swanson, who both had doubles.
The Vikings (3-7) also got a nice performance from pitcher
Xiomara Rueda-Marshall, who tossed five innings of scoreless relief. She allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one.
Hamline (9-4) jumped on Lawrence starter
Lizzy Angemi with five runs in the top of the first. Lawrence countered with a run in bottom half of the inning when Doherty tripled and Haller followed with a double.
Lawrence left runners on in the third and the fifth, had a runner thrown out at the plate in the sixth and left a pair of runners aboard in the seventh.Â
The Vikings are off Sunday before facing Smith College and Manchester University on Monday.
