CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team made the most of its chances Monday in a 4-2 nonconference victory over Smith College.
Lawrence managed just one hit in the contest, but the Vikings took advantage of six walks, a hit batter and two Smith errors.
 Â
Avery Chilson put together a fine effort in the circle for the Vikings (4-7). Chilson went the distance, allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out three and not walking a batter.
Lawrence jumped on Smith (2-3) with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Mattigan Haller got the rally started with a walk, and
Janessa Gonzalez followed with a single to right field.
Gillian Guerriero was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.Â
 Â
Jordan Wallin-Swanson followed with a walk to bring home Haller, and
Kourtney Mercer walked to bring Gonzalez to the plate for a 2-0 lead.
Khayla Santiago's groundout scored Guerriero and the Vikings led 3-0.
The Vikings tacked on another run in the third without the benefit of a hit. Guerriero started the inning with a walk and moved to second on Wallin-Swanson's sacrifice. The play continued with a throwing error by Taz Tamai that allowed Guerriero to score for a 4-0 lead.
The Pioneers countered with two runs in the top of the fourth, but that's all Smith would get. Chilson stranded one runner in fifth, two more in the sixth and two more in the seventh to seal the victory.Â
