CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team dropped a tight 3-1 nonconference decision to St. Lawrence University on Thursday.
Lawrence picked up seven hits, just one fewer than St. Lawrence, but couldn't get a key hit on which to build a big inning.
St. Lawrence got single runs in the first, third and six innings against Lawrence's
Avery Chilson.Â
The Saints (3-4) led 2-0 heading to the top of the sixth, but the Vikings (4-9) sliced the lead in half.
Jordan Wallin-Swanson got the rally started with a one-out single, and
Gillian Guerriero followed with a single. After both runners moved up on a passed ball, the Saints got a fielder's choice to cut down a runner at the plate. An error on
Taylor Hughes' ground ball allowed Guerriero to score and trim the lead to 2-1 but that was all the damage the Vikings could do.
St. Lawrence pitcher Izzy Melanson worked around
Zoe Doherty's lead-off single in the seventh to pick up the save.
Chilson scattered eight hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter in going the distance.
