Offense powers Lawrence past Bucs

BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team scored in five consecutive innings Tuesday en route to a 10-5 Midwest Conference victory over Beloit College at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.
Lawrence pounded out 16 hits, including six for extra bases, and scored at least one run in innings four through eight.
Edan Perez went 4-for-5 with a homer and a double, drove in three runs and scored twice to pace the Vikings (21-8, 13-2 MWC). Tate Hartlaub was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and a run batted in for Lawrence. Jacob Charon also went 3-for-5 for the Vikings with a run scored, and Taylor Freeman blasted a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs. Nathan Depew finished 2-for-2, scored a run and drove in a run for Lawrence.
Lawrence trailed 2-0 after the opening inning but got on the board in the top of the fourth. Perez and Charon led off the inning with singles, and Perez later scored on Freeman's groundout to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Vikings grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. Ben Gutowski got things started with a single and scored on Hartlaub's double to tie it at 2-2. After a Perez single, the Vikings executed a double steal with Hartlaub scoring for a 3-2 advantage.
Beloit (17-10, 10-6) tied it in the bottom of the fifth, but Lawrence took the lead back in the top of the sixth. Freeman got that rally started with a walk and came in to score on Gutowski's double for a 4-3 lead. Depew then doubled to score Gutowski, and the Vikings led 5-3.
Perez added to the lead in the seventh when he hit a one-out solo homer. After Charon followed with a single, Freeman belted a two-run homer for an 8-3 lead. Lawrence tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth courtesy of Perez's two-run double for a 10-3 edge.
Nick Katz started for the Vikings and allowed three runs on four hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out two and walked two. Brandon Brust picked up the win in relief to move to 3-0 on the season. He worked 3.1 innings of one-hit relief, striking out six and walking four.
Eamon Burke allowed five runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings and took the loss for Beloit.
The second game of the doubleheader was halted by rain in the top of the fourth with Lawrence holding a 5-2 lead. Lawrence will complete the three-game series with Beloit on April 24 in Appleton.
