APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team rode the strong pitching performance from
Avery Chilson in the nightcap to pick up a nonconference doubleheader split with Mount Mary University on Wednesday at Whiting Field.
Lawrence won the second game 4-1, and Mount Mary took the opener 10-2.
Chilson went the distance in game two to improve to 10-9 on the season. She allowed six hits and one run, struck out five and walked three.Â
 Â
Zoe Doherty went 3-for-3 with two doubles to lead the Vikings (14-20). Lawrence's
Kourtney Mercer was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, and
Janessa Gonzalez was 2-for-2.Â
Lawrence got on the board in the bottom of the first when Gonzalez's lineout to left field turned into a sacrifice fly to score
Mattigan Haller. Mercer later singled to score Doherty, who had doubled, and Lawrence was up 2-0.
The Vikings tacked on a run in the third when Doherty doubled and later scored on
Jordan Wallin-Swanson's groundout, and Lawrence made it 4-0 in the fifth when Doherty singled and came in to score on Mercer's single for a 4-0 lead.Â
Mount Mary (10-27) picked up a run in the sixth, but Chilson worked a perfect seventh to close out the game.Â
In the first game, Brianna Lupa allowed only two hits over seven innings to get the win for Mount Mary. The Blue Angels led 3-2 but pulled away with seven runs over the final three innings.
