ELMHURST, Ill. --
Kylie Melonis scored midway through the second half Friday to break a tie and lift the Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 2-1 nonconference victory over Elmhurst University at Langhorst Field.
Lawrence (2-1-0) also got an early goal from
Erica Grube while putting together a stout defensive effort.
The Vikings jumped on top just 3:07 into the match when Grube took a pass from
Ava Elders and beat Elmhurst goalkeeper Erin Fitzharris for a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until late in the first half when Lauren Nevis scored with just 2:20 remaining before halftime to tie the match at 1-1.
Lawrence then took the lead for good at the 63:08 mark when
Natalie Linebarger fed Melonis, who scored her first goal of the season, and it proved to be the game-winner.Â
The Vikings made that lead stand up by holding Elmhurst to just three shots in the final 45 minutes. Lawrence had a 13-8 edge in shots for the match.
 Â
Ella Lysne made two saves to pick up the win for the Vikings. Fitzharris stopped four shots for Elmhurst (1-1-2).
