Vikings nipped in OT by Lakeland

    APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's basketball team rallied late in regulation Saturday to tie it, but Lakeland University hung on for a 102-98 nonconference overtime victory at Alexander Gymnasium.
    Nathan Valentine poured in a career-high 32 points for the Vikings as he went 11-for-17 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range. Valentine added six rebounds and four assists.
    Casey Schoenecker added 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Vikings. Hogan Demovsky and Landon Key had 15 points apiece for Lawrence (4-9). Demovsky was 5-for-6 from the field, including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, and Key picked up a career-high nine assists. 
    Nicholas Gouriotis rounded out Lawrence's starting five with 13 points and six rebounds.
    Cliff McCray led Lakeland (3-9) with 22 points.
    Lawrence shot 53.6 percent for the game, including 44.8 percent on 3-pointers, but Lakeland shot 56.9 percent from the field. 
    The teams traded the lead before Lakeland eased out to a 67-58 lead with 12:47 left. Lawrence chipped away at the lead and Key's 3-pointer cut the margin to 71-70 with 7:34 remaining.
    The Muskies pushed the advantage back to 81-75 before Valentine drained a 3-pointer and Schoenecker followed with a layup to cut the margin to 81-80. After a McCray basket, Gouriotis buried a 3-pointer to tie the game at 83-83. 
    Lakeland grabbed the lead back on Asanjai Hunter's layup, but Gouriotis tied it at 85-85 with a layup of his own. The teams traded missed shots in the final minute and the game headed to overtime.
    Schoenecker got the first basket of the overtime, but Lakeland hit four of its first five shots to take a 94-91 lead. Lakeland expanded the lead to 99-93 before Valentine hit a pair of free throws and scored on a layup off a Key steal to cut the lead to 99-97 with 10 seconds left. 
    The Muskies then made three of the final four free throws to seal the victory.
    Lawrence jumps back into Midwest Conference play when the Vikings host Monmouth College on Wednesday.
