Late run sinks Lawrence in battle with Scots

APPLETON, Wis. -- A late scoring run proved to be the difference Wednesday as the Lawrence University men's basketball team fell 70-55 to Monmouth College in a Midwest Conference game at Alexander Gymnasium.
Monmouth put together a 12-3 scoring run to grab a double-digit lead with three minutes left and held on to the advantage from that point.
Landon Key led Lawrence (4-10, 2-3 MWC) with 17 points as she went 7-for-11 from the field. Key added three rebounds and a pair of steals. Casey Schoenecker went 4-for-6 from the floor on his way to 11 points for the Vikings.
Zay Brown paced Monmouth (9-4, 3-1) with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Scots jumped on Lawrence early and led 12-3 to start the contest. Lawrence was still down nine when the Vikings went on an 11-0 run. Key scored six points during the run, and Caleb Nash added a 3-pointer as the Vikings took a 24-22 lead. Lawrence led 29-28 at the half.
Schoenecker scored seven consecutive points and Nathan Valentine added a layup to start the second half as the Vikings raced out to a 38-28 lead. Monmouth countered with an 11-2 run to trim the lead to 40-39.
Lawrence trailed 49-47 after Key hit a 3-pointer with 7:15 left, but Monmouth went on the decisive scoring run to grab a 61-50 advantage with 3:03 left. Lawrence didn't get closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
