Lawrence drops season opener to Wisconsin River Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Lawrence University fell to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 7-1 on the road on Friday night, despite a 36-save performance by their goaltender.

The game commenced with Lawrence quickly gaining the advantage at 1:50, as Ethan Johnson scored the first goal of the season with assists from Luke Robertson and Roman Cherniak. Despite a strong offensive showing, the Vikings were unable to extend their lead, with several shots saved by UW-River Falls' goalkeeper Brennan Boynton.

UW-River Falls equalized at 13:59 with a goal from Keenan Ingram, assisted by Gavin Middendorf and Ben Portner. The Vikings had a power play opportunity shortly after but failed to capitalize. Ingram struck again at 17:07, putting the Falcons ahead. The first period concluded with UW-River Falls leading 2-1.

Lawrence faced a challenging second period, starting strong with Ethan Look winning the initial faceoff at the 20:00 mark. Despite several attempts on goal, including efforts by Johnson and Ben Winkelmann, the Vikings were unable to find the back of the net. The Falcons capitalized on opportunities, securing goals by Tyler Lee at 17:48 and Ingram at 14:49 during a power play, extending their lead.

The Vikings continued to press with shots from Cody Brekke and Ethan Valdez but were consistently thwarted by UW-River Falls' goaltender Boynton. A third goal by Hunter Jones at 09:32 widened the gap further. The period concluded with a series of penalties on both sides, leaving Lawrence trailing 5-1 at the end of the second period.

Lawrence maintained a strong defensive presence in the third period, with Ken Turelli making multiple saves to keep the Falcons at bay. Despite these efforts, UW-River Falls extended their lead with goals by Max Collette at 17:36 and Jonny Meiers at 4:42. Lawrence's attempts to respond were thwarted by the opposing goaltender, Boynton, who stopped numerous shots, including those from Adam Brzezicki and Michael Valdez. The period concluded with Lawrence unable to close the gap, resulting in a 7-1 final score in favor of UW-River Falls.
