Late goal gives Lawrence win over Wisconsin River-Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Lawrence University (1-1-0) defeated the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (1-1-0) with a 4-2 victory on Thursday night. Lawrence's goalie Nolan Mahaffey made 30 saves to help secure the win.

The first period commenced with Lawrence winning the initial faceoff and maintaining strong control in the faceoff circle throughout the period. Despite numerous attempts by UW-River Falls, Lawrence goaltender Nolan Mahaffey successfully stopped all shots on goal, including early saves against Hunter Jones and Ben Portner. Lawrence faced a brief setback when Kenny Sutton received a two-minute penalty for hitting from behind, granting the Falcons a power play, which Lawrence effectively killed without conceding any goals. In the closing minutes, Reid Lune's tripping penalty gave the visitors a power play opportunity, but the period ended without any score from either side.

Ethan Look opened the scoring in the second period for Lawrence at 17:49, assisted by Adam Brzezicki and Robby Pustulka. The Falcons responded at 09:39 with an equalizer from Keenan Ingram, assisted by Ryan Tong. Vladimir Fadeev reclaimed the lead for Lawrence at 06:40, thanks to assists from Roman Cherniak and Logan Schwartzhoff. However, the home team tied it again with a goal by Ben Portner at 03:53, assisted by Luke Margenau and Zach Sondreal, closing the period at a 2-2 stalemate.

Luke Robertson scored the game-winning goal for Lawrence at 16:03, assisted by Roman Cherniak and Ethan Johnson, extending their lead to 3-2. Despite the Falcons' efforts to respond, Lawrence's defense and goaltending held firm. Cody Brekke added an insurance goal at 3:23, with assists from Jeb Dee and Jacob Jakusz, increasing Lawrence's lead to 4-2. The home team pulled their goalie twice in the final minutes but could not breach Lawrence's defense, resulting in a decisive two-goal victory for the visitors.

Vladimir Fadeev scored a goal on two shots, contributing to his team's offensive efforts. Ethan Look added a goal and excelled at faceoffs, winning eight out of 12 for a 66 percent success rate. Luke Robertson recorded a crucial goal, marking the game-winner with his single shot. Roman Cherniak provided two assists, facilitating scoring opportunities for his teammates.
