Explosive first half helps Lawrence continue strong start to the season

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence (4-0, 0-0 Midwest Conference) secured a decisive 84-71 victory over Martin Luther (1-3, 0-0 UMAC) on Saturday at Alexander Gym. The Vikings capitalized on turnovers, scoring 17 points off 14 Martin Luther turnovers.

Lawrence opened the game aggressively, capitalizing on Martin Luther's early turnovers to gain a foothold. Caleb Nash was instrumental early with a key steal thatr set the tone for the home team. The Knights initially took a 4-0 lead, but the Vikings quickly responded with a three-pointer by Nicholas Gouriotis at 17:28. A standout performance from Casey Schoenecker, who scored multiple layups, helped the Vikings establish a commanding 28-16 lead by 10:41. C.J. Campbell further extended the lead with a series of successful plays, including a three-pointer at 4:34. Lawrence concluded the first half with a 50-30 advantage, propelled by strong bench contributions and points in the paint.

In the second half, Lawrence maintained a strong lead, opening with a 57-35 advantage after a three-point play by Hogan Demovsky at 17:25. Martin Luther attempted to close the gap with Ethan Kjenstad and Trey Lauber combining for three-pointers, trimming the deficit to 57-43 by 14:50. The Vikings responded with a 3-pointer from Nathan Valentine, extending their lead to 65-47 at the 12:56 mark. Despite a late push, including a three-pointer by Benjamin Vasold at 2:42, Lawrence secured a decisive victory with an 84-71 final score, aided by key baskets and defensive rebounds throughout the half.
