Vikings hold off hungry Eagles

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence edged the University of Northwestern-St. Paul 72-67 in a tightly contested game at Alexander Gym. Lawrence overcame a four-point halftime deficit by outscoring the visitors 39-30 in the second half. The home team capitalized on their three-point shooting, converting 10 of 27 attempts, and secured a critical advantage with 45 rebounds. Despite the Eagles' efforts, including forcing 13 turnovers, Lawrence's strong finish secured the victory.

The game commenced with CJ Campbell quickly putting Lawrence ahead with a three-pointer just 22 seconds into the half. Campbell's early shooting accuracy helped establish momentum, as he contributed multiple three-pointers in the opening minutes. Lawrence maintained a slight edge through effective rebounding and a strong defensive presence, highlighted by two blocks and nine assists.

As the half progressed, the Eagles countered with efficient shooting, particularly from Japheth Nyamari, who consistently scored and kept the visitors within reach. Despite Lawrence's strong rebounding efforts, which led to a total of 22 boards, turnovers became a challenge, allowing the Eagles to seize the lead in the latter part of the half. The half concluded with the Eagles holding a narrow 37-33 lead.

Lawrence began the second half with a pivotal 3-pointer by CJ Campbell, assisted by Landon Key, to reclaim the lead at 19:31. Despite the Eagles' brief scoring spurts, Lawrence maintained momentum with strategic plays, including a key defensive rebound by Casey Schoenecker at 8:31, followed by Nicolas Manzanera's 3-pointer at 12:19 to edge ahead.

In the latter part of the half, Lawrence capitalized on free throws and defensive stops, with Schoenecker's layup and free throws extending the lead. A late push by the Eagles brought the game within reach, but Nathan Valentine's free throws in the final seconds sealed the half for Lawrence. The half ended with Lawrence holding a 72-67 lead.

CJ Campbell led Lawrence with 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers and grabbing seven rebounds. Casey Schoenecker contributed significantly by scoring 17 points and securing a double-double with 10 rebounds. Hogan Demovsky added 13 points, converting three of his five attempts from beyond the arc. Nathan Valentine showcased his defensive skills by recording two steals and dishing out four assists.

The Vikings play Martin Luther College at Alexander Gymnasium on Saturday, November 15 at 4:00 PM.
