Vikings drop home contest to Spartans

APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence (2-9-0, 0-7-0) was defeated by Aurora University (8-1-0, 6-1-0), 4–2, at home. Lawrence's power-play goal in the first period highlighted their effort against the conference leader.

The first period began with the Spartans taking an early advantage, capitalizing on a power play at 14:05 with a goal by Chayce Schmidt, assisted by Jakson Kirk and Chase Broda. The Vikings responded with defensive efforts, including Cody Brekke blocking a shot. Despite these efforts, Aurora extended their lead to 2–0 with an even-strength goal by Conor Ronayne at 10:56.

Lawrence found momentum when Ben Winkelmann scored a power-play goal at 6:24, assisted by Cade Dewolf and PJ Noonan, narrowing the deficit to 2–1. However, the Spartans regained their two-goal advantage with a power-play goal from Jacob Brockman at 3:36. The period ended with Lawrence trailing 3–1, maintaining pressure but unable to further cut into the lead.

In the second period, Aurora extended their lead early with an unassisted goal by Lukas Sedlacek, pushing the score to 4-1. The Vikings responded by maintaining pressure and generating scoring opportunities, which culminated in a goal by Ethan Look, assisted by Ethan Johnson and Carter Cloutier, reducing the deficit to 4-2. Despite Aurora's persistent attempts, goaltender Nolan Mahaffey made several key saves to keep the game within reach. The period closed with the Vikings trailing by two goals.

The Vikings entered the third period trailing by two goals. Early attempts on goal by Cloutier and Brekke tested Aurora's defense but were saved by Matt O'Donnell. Despite controlling several faceoffs, Lawrence was unable to capitalize on offensive opportunities.

A power play opportunity arose for the Vikings at 15:10 after Jakson Kirk from Aurora received a penalty for roughing. However, with Roman Cherniak's penalty shortly after, both teams returned to even strength without a change in score. Aurora maintained their defensive resilience, blocking shots and keeping Lawrence at bay.

In the final minutes, the Vikings had another power play following a tripping penalty on Ryder Many Grey Horses of Aurora. Lawrence pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but Aurora held firm. Despite Lawrence's efforts, including multiple shots by Cloutier, the score remained unchanged. The game ended with the Spartans maintaining their 4-2 lead.
