CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team got a superb pitching performance from
Georgia Sedlack and some key base hits in a 5-1 nonconference win over Union (N.Y.) College on Saturday at Legends Field.
Sedlack went the distance to improve to 2-2 on the season. She scattered six hits, struck out 10 and walked three.
Kourtney Mercer went 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs for the Vikings (3-7), who finished with nine hits.
Lawrence grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Mercer doubled and came in to score on
Ava Pilgrim's single up the middle.
The Vikings stretched the lead with three runs in the fourth. Mercer got the rally started with a one-out single, and
Gillian Guerriero followed with a walk. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third,
Sajel Stewart-Verna doubled to score both runners, and the Vikings led 3-0.
Zoe Doherty followed with a double to score Stewart-Verna, and Lawrence had a 4-0 edge.
Lawrence pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fifth when
Taylor Hughes tripled and later came in to score on
Avery Chilson's groundout.
Union finally got on the board in the sixth, but a pair of popups and a strikeout ended the threat. Sedlack struck out two more in the seventh to close out the game.
Lawrence gets a day off Sunday and returns to action with a pair of games on Monday. Â
