Lawrence slugs its way past Westminster

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Lawrence University softball team pounded out six extra-base hits and rolled to a 16-7 nonconference victory over Westminster (Mo.) College on Monday.
Lawrence scored at least two runs in four innings, all capped by a six-run seventh inning.
Mattigan Haller went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs batted in and two runs scored for the Vikings. Zoe Doherty drove in four runs with a help of a home run and scored three times for Lawrence (4-7).
Jordan Wallin-Swanson went 2-for-2 with a double, Gillian Guerriero was 2-for-4 with a double and Kylan Arndt was 2-for-5 for the Vikings.
Avery Chilson picked up the win after working 5.1 innings. She allowed seven runs on 11 hits. Georgia Sedlack got two critical outs in the sixth, and Arndt pitched a scoreless seventh.
The Vikings took a 2-1 lead in the third with a pair of runs with the help of doubles by Haller and Wallin-Swanson. Westminster (3-14) countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Lawrence came right back in the top of the fourth with five runs. The Vikings loaded the bases and Adrie Villa and Doherty both picked up walks to drive in runs and tie the game. Haller delivered her second sacrifice fly of the game to give Lawrence the lead before Jenna Bode drew another bases-loaded walk. Arndt's groundout scored Doherty to put Lawrence up 7-4.
The Vikings added three more runs in the fifth when Doherty blasted a three-run homer for a 10-4 edge.
Westminster climbed back into it with three runs in the sixth to trim the margin to 10-7, but the Vikings sealed the win in the top of the seventh.
Lawrence scored six times on six hits to pull away. Haller had a two-run single, and Taylor Hughes drove in two more with a double. Guerriero finished the rally with a run-scoring double for a 16-7 lead.
